From a Single Sheed

This piece was folded from a single sheet of paper – 14ft. long and 3 ft wide. Several cuts were made into the sheet, dividing it into squares with the corners left uncut. The squares were then folded to create a flower pattern; like a cluster of blossoms from a single seed…

In Japan, the cherry blossoms (sakura) are symbolic of new beginnings as they mark the start of spring. When the first blossom blooms, the rest of the blossoms flourish instantly; bringing hope to spectators as they dream of greater things to look forward to. Due to the nature of the sakura flowers multiplying in numbers after the first flower blooms, ‘sakura’ is also commonly used to describe a person making the first appearance, and attracting greater numbers while doing so (e.g. the first customer at a sales booth who attracts a greater number of customers, the first dancer on the dance floor who encourages more people to join etc).

“From a single sheed” was created in November 2018 to celebrate the new office of dkstudio architects inc; a company that initially began in a home office, with only the principals Dmytriy Pereklita and Karen Mak running the business. The flower pattern was inspired by the patterns often seen in the storefronts of Louis Vuitton; one of the dkstudio’s first clients, and former employer of Karen Mak; hence planting the seed to dkstudio’s growth. As their business grew, so did their family; and at last it was time for a new office, and a new beginning.

The company moved to its new location in the summer, and since then gained more employees and more projects. In mid-November 2018 the company held its opening party, during the time which my artwork was hung at the entrance corridor of the office. It was a very snowy day; but despite so, the party had a surprisingly high turn-out, with guests multiplying like the flowers on a cherry blossom tree – A beautiful way to end 2018 for dkstudio; with new beginnings yet to come as the blossoms return every year.
