Big Ben ticks Goodnight

"Big Ben ticks Goodnight" by Mui-Ling Teh

Let the magic unfurl in the wake of night,
As the city shines with splendid light.

Within the heart of modern activity,
There is preserved a piece of history.

Today will someday be called the past.
Good night Big Ben, take the year to a rest.

Written December 26, 2010.

The image was taken with an Olympus FE-340 on January 1 2009; London, UK. This image is also a part of my London Calendar. The Big Ben clock tower and the London Eye Ferris wheel illuminated on the night of New Years 2009. At the time I had just completed my exchange in Rome, Italy (which ran between September - December 2008), and was about to start my internship in London.

The night before a friend showed me around the Westminster area of London, and later, following the New Year's count down, we saw the London eye fireworks from the Westminster Bridge. The following morning I watched the New Year's parade, then did a whole day of site seeing. As I was watching the parade from a spot not too far from Trafalgar square, I began my site seeing around there; I saw the Horse Guards, went into the Horse Guards Parade, and visited St. James’s Park, which had so many different kinds of birds. I remembered seeing new species of birds in Hyde Park, but at St. James’s Park there were even more. I don’t see that many species in Canada (unless I’m in the zoo), I think London has more Canadian geese than Canada does!

As night began to fall I also saw the Queen Victoria Memorial. I didn’t get too up close to it because it was getting cold, and I was eager to get to the Big Ben up close. Even while walking along a busy street flanked by grey stone buildings (along Great George St.), Big Ben illuminated beautifully in the distance; and when I got closer, it felt like a like a sanctuary within a hustle bustle city, hence "Within the heart of modern activity, there is preserved a piece of history."

After spending a good amount of time photographing Big Ben from various angles, I made my way back via the Westminster Bridge; though also took the time to check out Hungerford Bridge:
